30th July 2018
The 2018 IWWF Europe & Africa (E&A) Wakeboard Championships got underway today at an amazing venue at Borgo San Pietro, Lago del Salto with 116 riders representing 16 countries, including a rider from Moldova for the first time.
The site was basking in glorious sunshine with the competition commencing with Master Women’s category. Sabrina Hafen from Switzerland was the first rider in this category on the water; there were a series of inverts – front rolls, scarecrows, tantrums and back rolls landed in this category.
Next up was Veteran Men, a competitive category with 14 riders. In the first heat, veteran Swiss rider and former IWWF World Masters Men’s Champion Andy Meyenberg set the standard by performing a clean executed run, landing a Whirlybird and Batwing, and adding a grab to almost every trick. Alexander Guilin from Moldova, making his debut in his first IWWF E&A Championships, landed a series of tricks that saw him finishing second to advance to the semi-finals. The gold-medal favourite and team captain of Italy, Pierluigi Mazzia, had to brave the wind as it picked up and finished 2nd in his heat, narrowly edged out by Xavier Diotallevi from France.
The Junior Women category was up next with Melissa Lock (GBR) winning the first heat and Italian rider Alize Piana narrowly winning the second heat.
The Girls category brought the curtain down on the first day of competition with an outstanding run by Anna Maria Kushkovskaya from Russia. She performed a series of inverts, 360’s and a 540’s to win her heats
Competition resumes tomorrow at 9:00 am and will be live streamed; please follow this link for information:
